Emotion Regulation in Contexts

Project: An expansive understanding of the relationship between depression and emotional dysregulation: focusing on the sensitivity and responsiveness in interpersonal situations

Supervisor/Lab Director: Hyang Sook Kim, Ph.D.

  • Assisted Dr. Kim with developing research questions about emotion regulation focusing on contexts (time and social interaction)

  • Collected data using the experience sampling method (70 participants 5 times per day for 7 days)

  • Measured daily emotion, emotion regulation strategies, time perspective, social interactions (intimacy and trust), stress, social support, etc

  • Trained undergraduate/graduate research assistants and analyzed the data using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM 7.0)

Multimodal Investigations and Interventions in Mental Disorders: A Comprehensive Study on Neurophysiology, Brain Structure, and Cognitive Function

Projects

Supervisor/Lab Director: Seung-Hwan Lee, M.D., Ph.D.

1. A study on the differences in genetic, neurophysiology, and brain structure in patients with major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, psychiatric disorder, and healthy people

  • Scored the Clinical Assessment Interview for Negative Symptoms (CAINS) and Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) to patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder

  • Scored the Atypical Depression Diagnosis Scale (ADDS) and the CORE measure for patients with major depressive disorders (MDD)

2. Development of a solution for the management of cognitive function in older adults using PBM and Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS)

  • Assessed neuro-cognitive functioning and brain HbO2 level in patients with MDD using an fNIRS

  • Provided Guidance for participants in self-administering home-based fNIRS

  • Administered the Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale (SOFAS) and conducted neurocognitive assessments, including the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD) and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale subtests

3. Development of biomarkers and Investigation of treatment effects for several psychiatric disorders

  • Applied EEG techniques for data collection to investigate the effect of inter-stimulus interval on the 40-Hz auditory steady-state response (ASSR) in patients with schizophrenia

  • Applied Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) and guided the home-based self-administered tDCS to patients with MDD

  • Centrifuged blood samples and separated plasma from whole blood in participants diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and MDD (totaling 60)

  • Administered the Montgomery Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), Bipolar Depression Rating Scale (BDRS) and Colombia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS)

4. Cooperation with other students

  • Participated in the development of a novel digital therapy for youth depression

  • Assisted with data analysis and interpretation of results using machine learning

Ongoing Project: Network analysis of Unified Protocol (UP) targets

Supervisor/Lab Director: Sunkyung Yoon, Ph.D.

  • Assisted Dr. Yoon with developing research questions and reviewing papers about network analysis

  • Studied how to conduct network analysis (GIMME, Vector Auto Regression, Network Comparison Test, etc) using R
